Live Line Tower Replacement

Stamped crane& Rigging: Live Line Tower Replacement
In April 2011 Stampede Crane (a division of TNT Crane Canada), was contracted by Alta Link, the first independent transmission provider in the Canadian electrical industry, to temporarily remove de-energized as well as live, energized power lines for the replacement of a tower.
Tower no. 19 on the 917 line in Calgary needed to be replaced with a taller tower to maintain line clearance and Stampede Crane was there to get the job done safely & efficiently.
Using a Liebherr 1055 crane, Stampede removed the de-energized lines and using a Liebherr 1095 crane with the assistance of a Line Master robotic arm owned by Alta Link, they removed the 240 kV (240 000 volts) energized power lines.
Working with live power lines requires precision safety management practices which Alta Link delegated to Stampede Crane. “We strictly follow Alta Link’s safety procedures when working with live power lines. We ground the equipment and the power transmission tower by attaching a clamp and cable to the equipment and tower so that if there’s a spike in the power transmission it will go into the ground, ensuring a safe working site” commented Ed Belder from Stampede Crane.
Once the lines were clear of the existing tower, it was dismantled by a Liebherr 1160 and a new tower, twenty feet taller was installed. The lines were reconnected and the one day job was completed successfully.
Customer Testimonial:
“While other crane companies don’t want to work on projects handling energized power lines, we have been working with Stampede Crane for the last seven years at least. Their operators and equipment is top notch, professional, and focused on safety. Ed Belder is a great guy to work with; he is knowledgeable, accommodating, contributes valuable ideas and bends over backwards to get us what we need. I really enjoy working with him and Stampede Crane. We will continue to use their services and recommended them to others.”
