Safety Steps to Take Before Operating a Mobile Crane

Mobile Cranes | Sep 16 / 20

If you are operating on a job site where mobile cranes are being used or if you work in an industry in which mobile cranes are used frequently, it can be useful to know the safety steps to take before operating a mobile crane. At Stampede Crane & Rigging, our culture of safety has helped us to maintain an excellent safety record, so we are always ready to help clients understand the safety procedures that come into play with mobile cranes.

What Safety Steps Need to Be Taken Before Operating a Mobile Crane?

Whenever operating a mobile crane, it is important to extensively plan out the project before beginning the hoisting operation. Some steps to take to ensure safe operation of any crane before beginning work include:

Check the Jobsite and Surrounding Area

Before starting any work, make sure that you conduct a comprehensive scan of the entire work area. Look for any hazards like overhead wires, tree branches, or other obstacles. Be sure that you block off the area to pedestrians and other types of traffic. Check the condition of the ground to see if it is slippery or unstable.

Inspect the Equipment and Load

Take a detailed look at the crane and the load being lifted. You should have a checklist prepared for any operation that involves a mobile crane that outlines all of the items that need to be inspected before beginning your hoisting operation.

Ensure that Only Trained Operators Use the Equipment

Mobile crane equipment should only ever be used by trained and certified operators. Make sure that steps are taken to keep unqualified personnel out of the cab during operation.

Coordinate with Signalers

Trained spotters and signalers should be present whenever a crane is in use to keep the operator aware of things they might not be able to see.
